The Electric Machines and Power Electronics group at Marquette University employs two world renowned experts in the field of electric machine design and a leading expert in power electronics. Together, Dr. Demerdash and Dr. El-Refaie have over 70+ years of experience designing electrical machines both in industry and academia. Further, Dr. Weise has over 10 years of experience working in the industry and academics. Together, this team has collaborated on cutting edge research projects including medium voltage DC circuit breakers and all-electric propulsion in commercial aircraft.

Hao Chen

Visiting Ph.D. Candidate

Hao Chen received the B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the School of Electrical Engineering, Beijing Jiaotong University, Beijing, China, in 2012. He has been working towards the Ph.D. degree in the School of Automation, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing, China, since 2012. Since 2016, he has been with the department of electrical and computer engineering at Marquette University,, Milwaukee, WI, USA, as a joint Ph.D. student.

His research interests include electrical machine design and optimization, power electronic drives and motor control.

Fan Wu

Ph.D., Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Fan Wu received the B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, China, in 2010, 2012 and 2016, respectively, all in electrical engineering. During the Ph.D. studies, he visited the WEMPEC, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, WI, USA, as a joint Ph.D. student, from Sep 2014 to Oct 2015. His current research interests include permanent-magnet machines and drives, high specific power machine for aerospace application, fault analysis, fault diagnosis, and fault tolerance for PM machines and drives, advanced material and manufacturing of electrical machines.

Qingqing Ma

Ph.D., Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Qingqing Ma earned the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering at Beijing Jiaotong University, Beijing, China in 2014. During Ph.D., he has participated in several Mitsubishi Heavy Industries projects dealing with electric machine control technologies. After he graduated, he worked at FEEC in Virginia Tech as a postdoc fellow, leading projects with industrial partner Texas Instrument on torque ripple and acoustic noise minimization technologies in electrical machines. Since 2017, he has been working at Marquette University as a postdoc fellow. He is the coauthor of more than 10 papers published in international journals and conference records. His research interests are the design of electrical machines and drives and power electronics.

Mostafa Abarzadeh

Ph.D., Senior Member IEEE, Postdoctoral Fellow

Mostafa Abarzadeh received the B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. (All with Hons.) degrees in electrical engineering from the Sahand University of Technology (SUT), Tabriz, Iran, in 2008, 2011, and 2016, respectively.
He was a Visiting Ph.D. Researcher with the Aalborg University, Denmark, in 2015. From 2016 to 2017, he was an Assistant Professor with the Electrical Engineering Faculty of SUT. From 2017 to 2019, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the Canada Research Chair in Electric Energy Conversion and Power Electronics, École de Technologie supérieure (ÉTS), University of Quebec, Canada. Currently, he is a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the EMPOWER Lab., Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI, US. He has authored or co-authored over 40 journal and conference papers and book chapters and holds 6 patents including one U.S. patent. He has been a principle investigator (PI) of industrial and research grants in the field of the industrial electronics. He has implemented more than 25 industrial and research projects in the field of the industrial electronics and he has transferred know-how technologies to industry for more than 10 industrial and research projects. Since 2006, He has been a member of the Iran’s National Elites Foundation. He was a recipient of the Best Poster Presentation Award from the IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE) in 2015.
His current research interests include high performance high power density power electronic converters based on wide band gap (WBG) devices, as well as topology, modeling, control and modulation of power electronic converters, hybrid multilevel inverters, and applications of power electronics in renewable energy conversion, transportation electrification, power grid, and variable-speed motor drives.
